You'll need a permit if you:
- are driving a larger vehicle such as a van or utility vehicle
- using a large double axle trailer
- are walking to one of our sites - this is to keep you safe
Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) are only for local residents to use. The waste permit scheme helps to prevent trade waste from being deposited at our HWRCs.

Waste permit applications can only be processed Monday to Friday during office hours (9am to 5pm).
Vehicles that are allowed without a permit
These include:
- a car with or without a single axle trailer, up to three metres/10ft long without tipper
- campervan with no more than four wheels in total, registered with the DVLA as a 'Motor Caravan' on the V5 document
- motorhome with no more than four wheels in total, which is considered by the HWRC Traffic Marshall to be of a size that can be safely manoeuvred around the site
Any other vehicles will need a permit.
Vehicles that are not allowed
Some vehicles are not allowed at all, and we will not issue a permit for them. These include:
- any van or utility vehicle towing a trailer
- any vehicle with more than four wheels
- any trailer more than three metres/10ft long
- any 'tipper' vehicle or trailer
- agricultural type vehicles (for example tractors and driven-horseboxes)
- horse-trailers towed by any vehicle
- agricultural type trailers
- any vehicle carrying trade waste
- any tail lift vehicle
- 'Luton' type vans (Box-shaped vans)
- any vehicle which is considered by the HWRC Traffic Marshall to be of a size that cannot be safely manoeuvred around the site
Types of permits
There are three types of permit you can apply for:
Annual permit
For all types of recyclable material including paper, glass, card, cans, plastics and green waste.
These permits allow an unlimited number of visits to any recycling centre and unlimited amounts of these materials can be deposited.
They are valid for a full year.
General waste permit
These permits are valid for only one month and allow one visit per household.
You will be asked to specify on the permit what sort of waste you will be bringing, and will be checked when you arrive at the site.
Pedestrian permit
You can walk in to our sites to bring your household recycling or rubbish, but you will need a permit so we can make sure your safe on our site.
