The Book of Remembrance
A beautiful entry in the Book of Remembrance provides a lasting record and a simple, though dignified, memorial.
The volumes of the Book of Remembrance are displayed in glass cabinets in the Chapel of Remembrance, within the grounds of Distington Hall Crematorium.
The books contain a page for each day of the year. You can decide on which date the entry is to appear and you can then come and see your loved one’s epitaph on that date each year or online at any other time.
This date is personal to you and can be, for example, the date of death, the date of cremation, the birthday or wedding anniversary.
Entries can be 2, 5 or 8 lines with a maximum of 32 characters per line not including spaces. 5 or 8 line entries can include an emblem like a flower, badge or picture.
The Book of Remembrance is on display weekdays throughout the year, except public holidays. You can view any page of the book, on any day of the year you wish, including weekends and public holidays by using the electronic display in the Chapel of Remembrance.
The Book of Remembrance is also available online allowing friends and family all over the world to view the inscription from the comfort of their own home.

Personal memorial cards
Friends and relatives may wish to have a copy of the inscription as it appears in the Book of Remembrance, as a personal keepsake or to send to those who cannot easily visit the crematorium to see the original entry.
Memorial cards can also be created for those who do not wish to include a tribute in the Book of Remembrance.
Baby loss memorial book
In addition to an entry in the Book of Remembrance, we also have a memory book for babies in which you can write your own short inscription. This is also located in the Chapel of Remembrance.
Memorial options
This includes:
- bench memorials
- granite plaques
- memorial tree leaves
- child illustrations - for example, a teddy bear
- a folded car with a copy of inscription
Memorial benches
We offer you the opportunity to commemorate a loved one by dedicating a bench in their memory at our crematorium.
Benches can be placed in Copeland’s cemeteries and crematorium to commemorate a loved one or to provide a place to reflect.
We offer one type of recycled plastic bench, which is shown in the picture, and a remembrance plaque can be added if you wish.
The plaque is made from stainless steel and measures 63mm x 152mm. Inscriptions can be up to 5 lines long, with a maximum of 36 characters per line.
We will install the bench for an initial period of ten years, and this can be extended for a further five years (subject to the bench being in an acceptable condition).
Memorial plaques
A granite plaque can be placed on our memorial wall to commemorate a loved one. The memorial wall at Distington Hall Crematorium is located on the Chapel of Remembrance adjacent to the main car park. There are two sizes of granite plaque available which can accommodate an inscription of either three or five lines.
We will install and maintain the memorial plaques for a period of 15 years.
During this 15 year period, the maintenance and reasonable repairs of the plaque is our responsibility.
At the end of the 15 years, you may choose to replace the plaque or extend the period of maintenance, depending on the plaque’s condition. Once the plaque is installed the Council takes responsibility for all maintenance requirements.
No other maintenance arrangements are permitted. If the plaque is damaged beyond reasonable repair before the expiry of the 15 year period, the plaque will not be replaced.
Memorial tree
Located in the Chapel of Remembrance, the beautiful memorial tree is a hand sculptured work of art which is unique to Copeland. Both the tree and leaves are produced in the UK.
You can choose from a bronze, silver or gold coloured leaf with a two-line inscription, to be placed on the tree for a period of five years.
Inscribed replica leaves are also available as a personal keepsake. The leaves are made from extremely durable and weatherproof material, so can be hung outside.
Music and tributes
We also offer music and visual tributes.
There is also the option for an audio-visual display of special memories to be displayed on the crematorium's screens.
Donations fund
Many visitors to Distington Hall Crematorium express a desire to make a donation in memory of a relative or friend in a way that would contribute towards the continuing improvement of the facilities.
We warmly welcome and appreciate these expressions of financial support and have established a Donations Fund specifically for that purpose.
For every donation of more than £10 an acknowledgement of your kind donation can be made in the form of an inscription in our Donation Book in memory of a loved one.
The hand-bound book can be found on display in the foyer of the main crematorium building.
