Exotic, dangerous and wild animals licence

The Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 (Act) controls the keeping of certain wild animals.

You will need to apply for a licence if you have an exotic, dangerous or wild animal and you are not running a zoo, circus, pet shop or laboratory.

Apply for a dangerous wild animals licence

To get a licence you must:

  • be 18 years or over
  • not be disqualified or convicted under the Act
  • be the person who owns and possesses, or proposes to own and possess, the animal

Costs and fees

Visit the Cumberland Council fees and charges webpage.

Enclose a cheque for the relevant fee, made out to Allerdale Borough Council.

Application forms

To apply or renew your licence, you will need to complete and submit the application form.

We will not issue a licence until the conditions are met. These conditions will depend on the particular animal.
