About public health in Cumberland

Public health is about preventing disease and helping you to live a healthier and longer life by providing the information and support you need to do this.

We are responsible for a range of local public health activities such as:

  • supporting NHS health checks for 40 to 74 year-olds
  • commissioning drug and alcohol treatment services
  • providing public health support and advice to the North East North Cumbria (NENC) Integrated Care Board (ICB)
  • commissioning good sexual health services
  • developing ways to help reduce childhood obesity, including the national child measurement programme
  • working with Cumberland's Health and Wellbeing Board to develop joined-up solutions to some of Cumberland's long term challenges.
  • increasing levels of physical activity in communities through Active Cumbria
  • addressing health inequalities

The changes do not affect health care for treatment for injuries, illness or urgent medical conditions which remains the responsibility of the NHS.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) prevents, prepares for and responds to infectious diseases, and environmental hazards, to keep all our communities safe, save lives and protect livelihoods.  It provides scientific and operational leadership, working with local, national and international partners to protect the public's health and build the nation's health security capability.  It is an executive agency, sponsored by the Department of Health and Social Care.
