Housing advice when a relationship has broken down

Housing rights in a relationship breakdown can be complicated and you may need to seek advice before leaving your property.

If you have a joint tenancy or own a property with your ex-partner you may still have rights to occupy the place you are living in together.

To check what your rights are contact our Housing Options team.

There are several places you could visit for advice:

Shelter has produced a guide for people who have experienced a relationship breakdown and what their housing rights are after splitting up. You can visit Shelter's website or contact them by telephone on 0344 515 1944.

The Allerdale Citizens Advice Bureau offer general and legal advice and help. Contact them at Citizens Advice Allerdale or phone 01900 604735.

If you've decided that you need to find a new home, you will need to register on the housing register at Cumbria Choice and contact Westfield Housing Association on 01900 602906 or visit their website.
