Disabled residents can apply for up to £30,000 to adapt their homes to help them to maintain an independent lifestyle.
This grant is available for homeowners or tenants living in either private or housing association properties.
The grant can cover works such as:
- improving access to rooms and facilities. This might mean, for example, stairlifts, level access showers and door widening
- adapting heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use
- providing a heating system that suits your needs
- improving the entrances to your home and access to your garden
Funding options are available should essential work exceed £30,000 limit.
Referrals for Disabled Facilities Grants usually come through Adult Social Care Occupational Therapy Service, please contact 0300 3033 249. However, even if you are not eligible or a DFG is not right for you, we may still be able to help you through our range of discretionary grants.
The Council is currently establishing the new Cumberland Home Improvement Agency which will deliver a range of discretionary grants as well as DFGs. The aim of these discretionary grants is to help you stay safe, warm and independent at home for as long as possible.
The range of discretionary grants is set out within the Home Adaptations and Assistance Policy and will be phased in as the new service is established.
