Cumberland Council’s Workington day services based at Carlton Road have collaborated with a local bowling club to build local community connections for adults with learning disabilities supported through the service.
The regular sessions with Vulcan Park Bowling Club held throughout the summer have not only helped to develop physical and coordination skills but have also nurtured new and meaningful friendships between people that are supported by the service and the club members. One of the individuals has also been invited to join the team and certificates and medals were awarded during the friendly competitions held.
Councillor Martin Harris, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Adults and Community Health, said:
“The partnership between the team of volunteers at Vulcan Park bowling club and Carlton Road day service show the impact of inclusion in sport and how this can change lives for adults with learning disabilities. Community connection is incredibly important, particularly for people who have traditionally been side-lined. The volunteers hard work is admirable and has helped people access a sport they may not have previously considered.”
The sessions have been supported by dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers from the club and their innovative efforts have helped to improve accessibility and meaningful inclusion through the development of ramps and bowling aids. Their commitment has provided the people supported with a unique opportunity to engage in an activity that was previously unfamiliar to them.
The service and Vulcan Park bowling club look forward to the next season and opportunities to continue to build on the success of this partnership.
