During this festive season, Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) will remain open, except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day, when they will be closed. Additionally, all HWRCs will close at 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve – more details can be found on the council’s website.

The council is also reminding residents of the convenient 'recycling bring sites' availability, situated across the Cumberland patch, including those in supermarket car parks, and is grateful for the community’s collaboration in recycling items.

The bring sites will not have collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, but the council is committed to ensuring these sites are emptied regularly. If the bins/cages happen to be full, residents are kindly requested not to leave items on the ground to avoid any potential issues.

To maintain the cleanliness and integrity of these areas, enforcement officers, with the aid of CCTV surveillance, will be diligently monitoring the bring sites, for any instances of fly-tipping. Should the bins or cages be full, residents are politely asked to take their items home and return on another day.

Additionally, it is worth noting that foil or glitter wrapping paper, polystyrene, and other types of poly wrap or cellophane are non-recyclable and should be disposed of in general waste bins.

The council wishes to thank the community for their cooperation in observing these guidelines which is greatly appreciated and will help to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable Cumberland patch.

Councillor Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

“We understand that households generate more waste during this time of year, and we have plans in place for this. We want to thank all residents for their cooperation and patience during this very busy season."

“If residents can help us by taking items to the bring sites, this is very considerate – however, if the bring sites are full, please don’t leave items on the ground, as this is fly-tipping, so please be patient and if you can, bring your items back another day."

“We thank everyone for their understanding and commitment to recycling, and we wish everyone a wonderful and sustainable festive period."
