Preparations are underway for Cumberland’s first Arts, Culture and Heritage Discovery Day.
The free event has been organised by the Copeland Skills and Enterprise Partnership, supported by Helping Hands and Rosehill.
The showcase will be held on Friday 22 September at Whitehaven United Reformed Church, James Street, Whitehaven, CA28 7HZ between 10am and 3pm.
Anyone interested in volunteering or finding out job opportunities in the arts and culture sector is encouraged to attend the event.
Eighteen organisations including local museums, tourist attractions, theatres and arts agencies will be on hand to offer up the opportunities available within the Cumberland area.
David Himmelblau, a local volunteer who has now secured a job in the arts sector understands the value of volunteering, he said:
“I was involved with Kim at Helping Hands earlier this year when I was enrolled on a Volunteering Course through the County Council and was made aware of the potential opportunities within the locality in this sector.
“I subsequently attended an open day at Rosehill Theatre and was then invited to participate in a publicity event there. A most enjoyable and fruitful occasion thanks to the guidance and oversight of Kim and the team. I hope to hear of other projects in the future for my spare time. I am now employed as Project Lead and Safeguarding officer at the Vulture Club in Whitehaven. Thanks Kim and team.”
Kim Kimberlee-Smith, Helping Hands Inclusive Volunteering Lead (West) at Tullie added:
“I moved to the area during lockdown and didn’t know anyone. I wasn’t in work and didn’t know where to start again in this new place. I volunteered at Rosehill Theatre just to be with people and make friends. They were so lovely, welcoming and supportive.
“Then I got a role as a trustee there and loved the everyday buzz of being among creative people. I applied for a role working in the arts sector supporting people like me to volunteer and make a difference and because of my experience. I got it and now work in the sector for Tullie House. I’m a living actual example of the fact this actually can and does happen and if I can do it anyone can.”
The following organisations will be showcased at the Arts, Culture and Heritage Discovery Day: Theatre by the Lake, Florence Arts, The Beacon, Soundwave, Rosehill, Keswick Museum, Helping Hands, Kirkgate Arts and Heritage, Eskdale Mill, Carnegie, Senhouse Museum, Multicultural Cumbria, English Heritage, National Trust, Arts Council, Millom Heritage and Arts Centre, Cultural Trust/The Settlement and The Solway Hall.
Cumberland Council is a key partner in the Copeland Skills and Enterprise Partnership, Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said:
“This free showcase is a great opportunity to find out what opportunities are available in the arts, culture, and heritage sectors. As well finding out about volunteering, there will also be information on jobs available too.
“Come along and learn more about the organisations, the opportunities they have, and how you can get involved.”
Food and refreshments will be provided.
