Cumberland Council allocated £100,000 from National Highways

Moresby

A contribution of £100,000 has been received by Cumberland Council from National Highways to improve the highway infrastructure in the Moresby area of Whitehaven.

National Highways has organised vital improvement works to the A595 Moresby embankment including surfacing works, footway works and drainage improvements along the A595 near Moresby, significantly impacting numerous local businesses and residents in the vicinity.

During the ten weekend closures on the A595 Moresby, near Whitehaven, the local community has faced significant disruptions, leading to increased traffic on alternative routes. As a gesture of goodwill, and to assist in the repair and improvement of the local road network by the excess vehicles on other roads, National Highways has generously allocated £100,000 to Cumberland Council for the necessary repairs.

As part of the project, National Highways will also resurface the following sections of road:

  • From the A595 to St Bridget's Church in Lowca.
  • From the A595 to Moresby Church on Rosehill
  • From the A595 Howgate Roundabout towards Low Moresby Village

Councillor Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council’s Executive Portfolio Holder for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

“We are grateful to National Highways for their generous contribution, which will be dedicated to enhancing our local highway network.

“The recent improvement project on A595 near Moresby, being a National Highways initiative, reflects our collaborative approach to minimise disruptions for our residents. We are aware that diversions have been necessary during this period, leading to increased traffic on certain roads. This funding will play a crucial role in improving our highway network and addressing any impacts from the recent traffic diversions”.

Steve Mason, Project Manager at National Highways, added:

“We are proud to have contributed funds to Cumberland Council in support of vital improvements within Moresby and the surrounding area. Our commitment to the local community continues, as demonstrated by our on-going schedule of maintenance work in the region.

“Collaborating with Cumberland Council, our shared goal is to enhance the connectivity of roads and reduce congestion. By working together, we aim to establish safer and smoother journeys for the community.

“We are dedicated to not only improving the A595, but also contributing to the long-term prosperity of West Cumbria by investing in better connections across the region. We remain committed to creating positive changes to improve the area through continued engagement with residents and businesses.”
