Cumberland Council is digging deep to have a weed wipe-out in their patch!

Cumberland Council is informing residents, especially in the Carlisle area, that they are taking action against weeds.

Weeds are on ongoing problem for all the areas within the Cumberland patch, but this year has seen a significant increase in Carlisle.  Favourable weather conditions have contributed to extensive plant growth, including weeds. Additionally, a delayed start in weed spraying occurred due to negotiations with the supplier to secure the best value for the council's investment.

The Carlisle area has undergone a comprehensive spraying, and the Highways teams, in collaboration with Cumberland Council's Street Scene teams, is prioritising its teams across the following areas to deal with the extra weed growth currently being experienced:

  1. Main approaches into the city
  2. Around the Castle and the city centre streets
  3. Denton Holme
  4. Harraby
  5. Stanwix
  6. Botcherby
  7. Kingstown
  8. Morton
  9. Bell Vue
  10. Raffles
  11. Currock
  12. Upperby
  13. Longsowerby

The weed spray that is used is eco-friendly and safe for the environment, animals and human health. However, its effect on weeds might be lower compared to products used in private gardens. This results in reduced potency, longer timeframes for desired outcomes, and an elevated risk of dilution during unfavourable weather conditions.

Once the additional weed removal work is completed, it will be followed by a final spray across the city.

If any resident has further queries, or wishes to report any highway issues, including weed growth please either go to the Cumberland Council website, or phone the council on 0300 373 3730.

Councillor Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council’s Executive Portfolio Holder for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

“I would like to extend my thanks to the residents, particularly those in Carlisle, for their continuous patience and support as we address the weed issue in the area. The weather has been conducive to rapid plant growth, and our delayed start in weed control has allowed them to flourish.

“Our dedicated highways and street scene teams are aware of the challenges and have devised a comprehensive plan to tackle the unsightly weeds. While the weed killing solution, we use may take longer to show results compared to domestic products, it prioritises environmental safety, the well-being of our community, and our pets. Your understanding is greatly appreciated as we work towards a weed-free environment for all”.
