Cumberland Council is proud to announce a substantial investment of £800,000 for development works at Mayfield School at St Joseph’s Campus.
This significant investment has resulted in the creation of new sixth form facilities, enabling an increase in student capacity from 197 to 230.
The newly established sixth form facilities are situated separately from the existing school and are now hosted at the site that was St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Cockermouth.
These facilities have been carefully designed to meet the specific requirements of young people with special educational needs. While classes commenced in September, an official opening ceremony is scheduled for October to celebrate this remarkable achievement.
Mayfield School at St Joseph’s Campus is leased from the Diocese of Lancaster by Cumberland Council.
Councillor Elaine Lynch, Cumberland Council’s Executive Portfolio Holder for Lifelong Learning and Development, expressed her enthusiasm about this significant investment, stating:
“I am delighted that Cumberland Council has invested over £800,000 to develop this new sixth form facility at Mayfield School at St Joseph’s Campus.
“With increasing demand for special school places, this expansion creates much needed additional capacity, while providing fantastic new facilities which will help young people reaching the end of their time at school develop and prepare for adult life.
“This commitment demonstrates our dedication to fostering a nurturing environment for students and educators. By prioritising our education facilities, we are actively paving the way for a brighter future for our young people."
