Cumberland Council is pleased to announce a significant step forward in boosting road safety, with the upcoming installation of an Average Speed Safety Camera System along a designated stretch of the A689.

The council, as part of the Cumbria Road Safety Partnership (CRSP), will be installing the Average Speed Safety Camera System on a section of the A689 between Linstock and the Brampton roundabouts in North-East Cumbria. The system will operate over a length of approximately 6.1 miles.
The camera will be installed during week commencing 4 September.

The new camera section will supplement the existing three Average Speed Safety Camera sites which sites strategically positioned within Cumbria. These include the A69 at Warwick Bridge within Cumberland Council's jurisdiction, as well as the A66 sites at Kirkby Thore and Bassenthwaite Lake, overseen by Westmorland and Furness Council.

An Average Speed Safety Camera System measures how long it should take for a vehicle to travel a specific distance according to the speed limit. If a vehicle exceeds that expected time, its number plate is captured. This technology not only helps control speeding but also encourages drivers to remain attentive and engaged in their driving over extended periods.

Average Speed Safety Cameras, due to their high visibility do not only have the effect of curbing speeding, but they also have a secondary effect of ensuring that drivers stay present and focused on their driving for long periods of time.

Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Portfolio Holder for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

“The Average Speed Camera system is intended to positively influence driver behaviour and ensure that drivers comply with the set limits on roads. The cameras have a proven track record for reducing casualties and excessive speed. Ultimately, it creates a safer road environment for everyone who travels on them.

“This proactive step by Cumberland Council, in partnership with the Cumbria Road Safety Partnership (CRSP), highlights the commitment to safer roads and reinforces the shared responsibility of all road users in creating a secure and protected road network.”
