Cumberland Council is pleased to update residents and businesses on the next steps of the flood alleviation initiative work in and around Flimby.
In a concerted effort to safeguard Flimby and Maryport from flooding risks, the Environment Agency has generously allocated £1.5 million from its 'Flood Defence Grant in Aid' fund, for this project.
Marking an essential milestone, the flood alleviation programme has successfully completed the following tasks:
- Successful installation of the Penny Gill diversion culvert.
- Diversion of peak flows from Penny Gill to Furnace Gill.
- Remediation works to an existing flood gate adjacent to the A596.
- Elevation of surface water drainage systems in Coniston Avenue's residential areas.
- Implementation of additional dams, strategically positioned to slow water flow in the eastern woodland of Flimby.
- Substantial replacement of a culvert below the A596 at Bragg Beck.
Cubby Construction Limited, will commence operations on the Cat Gill culvert in mid-August. Work will then recommence on the A596 culvert in early October, for approximately two weeks, under a traffic management system.
The next phases of this project will be:
- Installation of Cat Gill diversion culvert
- Completion of Bragg Beck Culvert (A596)
- Construction of Penny Gill flood storage bund
