Private landlords and lettings agents are being offered free advice and information at a networking event hosted by Cumberland Council.
Property owners and agents will have the opportunity to meet and discuss the latest changes in housing law and legislation and ask experts questions.
The event will take place on Thursday 21 September, from 10.30am until noon, at Carlisle Civic Centre and is free of charge.
The National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA) will be updating landlords and letting agents on subjects such as the Renters Reform Bill announced in May this year. Topics will be covered such as:
- The end of no-fault evictions
- The new mandatory Ombudsman for landlords and tenants.
- The right to request a pet to keep at the property.
- A requirement for landlords to give two months’ notice of rent changes.
- New requirements for current assured and shorthold tenancy periods.
Immigration specialists will discuss right to rent legislation. Cumbria Fire and Rescue service will also provide updates on the new smoke and carbon monoxide alarm regulations.
Councillor Bob Kelly, Cumberland Council Executive Member for Policy and Regulatory Services, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for private landlords and lettings agents to network whilst ensuring they’re up to date with the latest bills, laws, and legislation.
“The rules have become more complex over the years, and there’s been some important updates recently, particularly with the announcement of the Renters Reform Bill which could bring an end to no-fault evictions, and the new smoke and carbon monoxide alarm regulations introduced last year.
“The penalties for not abiding by the rules can be severe and legal advice can be costly. We want to help ensure that landlords and lettings agents in the Cumberland area are well informed, and tenancies are safe and legal.
“We hope that by holding such sessions we ensure landlords are fully aware of and comply with the law and thereby protect them from action being taken against them, and equally protect people renting accommodation from inadequate and unlawful provision and having to challenge the conditions in which they are living.
