A family friendly open-air opera event, with a BSL interpreter, will be held at Carlisle’s Kingmoor North Reserve this Sunday (16 July).

Handpicked Productions presents The Promise at Cumberland Council’s nature reserve based on Chandler Way, Carlisle CA3 0JY.

Performances will be held at 11am and 2pm, lasting around an hour. The event is ideal for 6+ but all are welcome.

Based on the celebrated book The Promise, this new outdoor opera for families tells the story of a young girl who lives in a hard city.

Pay What You Decide - book your tickets on the Handpicked Productions website for free in advance then choose what you wish to pay after the performance.

Please bring along seating and a picnic.

Cllr Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said:
“Kingmoor Nature Reserve is one the Cumbria Coastal Community Forest (CCCF) sites and is a haven for visitors. It is also an ideal location for a community event of this type.

“This is the first time an open-air opera has been held at the nature reserve and we encourage people to get a ticket and enjoy Handpicked Productions bring the story to life.”

James Cobbold, Forest Director for CCCF, added:
"Kingmoor is a fantastic site for the Community Forest to support. Through the Trees For Climate fund we have been able to support the planting of around 10,000 trees and open up 13.5ha of land to the public. By developing a mixture of woodland and grassland, nature can thrive and with the addition of new paths and rights of way, communities have even more opportunities to explore this valuable nature reserve."

A bumper programme of open-air theatre events will be held in Carlisle this summer.
Performances by The Pantaloons theatre company will be held at Talkin Tarn Country Park, Brampton on Thursday 3 August and Thursday 24 August.
