Cumberland Council is updating the community on the next phase of the Carlisle Station Gateway project.

Carlisle Station Gateway project has scheduled the demolition of The Pools building, for week commencing, Monday 25 March 2024.  The works will take approximately six weeks, weather permitting, with the designated area already secured by fencing for safety. The demolition is a key next step in the delivery of the Carlisle Station Gateway Project and will open the area of the rear of the station making way for a new public square and public car park.

The demolition of The Pools will not impact the Turkish Baths. The council is actively collaborating with 'The Friends of the Turkish Baths' to ensure positive outcomes for this building. James Street will remain open for vehicular traffic during the works. The pavements adjacent to The Pools are closed and will remain closed throughout the works for public safety.

To date, Carlisle has benefited from over £80 million in public funding for various city projects, aiming to unlock the area's potential and draw and retain more residents and visitors into the city centre. Projects include developments at Carlisle Station, the University of Cumbria's Citadels Campus, and plans for Devonshire Street and English Street, among others.

The Carlisle Station Gateway project, a strategic regeneration project included in the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, with Cumberland Council in partnership with Network Rail has secured over £27 million of funding for this project. This regeneration project comprises of several vital elements:

  •  Northern Gateway: Court Square - Partial pedestrianisation of Court Square and improved pedestrian connections to and from the station.
  • Station Interior: Enhancements to the Court Square access, improved facilities for customers and an upgraded and welcoming entrance from George Square.
  • Southern Gateway: George Square (station entrance from James Street) - Public car parking being relocated to George Square to reduce the vehicular traffic at Court Square together with drop-off and bus replacement services.
  • Enabling Streets and Junctions: A focus on improving access at Water Street and Court Square Brow to improve access to the station, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists.

Cumberland Council wishes to thank the community for patience and support while improvements are made during the Carlisle Station Gateway project and apologises for any inconvenience.
