Commemorating Remembrance in Cumberland

On the build up to this year’s Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, Cumberland Council has put in place a programme of commemoration.

The council, which has signed the Armed Forces Covenant, is supporting the Royal British Legion led events.

Some of their vehicles - including refuse and highways - are displaying printed poppies and a ‘Lest We Forget’ message. Window stickers are also displaying the message at key buildings within the area, including libraries.

As part of the build-up to Remembrance Day, thousands of knitted and crocheted poppies are on display in Haverigg, Millom and Carlisle.

All poppies have been produced by local communities.

The handmade poppies on display in Haverigg and Millom Cenotaph have been installed by Millom Town Council.

The Carlisle poppies were produced by Carlisle Matters with the support of The Lanes. They are displayed in The Lanes, on the Market Cross and the Old Town Hall.

Other activities include:

  • The Civic Centre, Court Square and the Citadels in Carlisle, The Beacon in Whitehaven and Allerdale House in Workington are all lit red at night-time on the week leading up to Armistice Day (Monday 4 November - Monday 11 November).
  • The Union flag to be flown from outside Cumbria House, the Civic Centre and the Old Town Hall in Carlisle, the Copeland Centre in Whitehaven and Allerdale House in Workington on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day (Sunday 10 and Monday 11 November).
  • Any council owned buildings open to the public on Remembrance Sunday Armistice Day and will commemorate the national two-minute silence at 11am.

Deputy Leader for Cumberland Council, Cllr Lisa Brown is the Lead Portfolio Holder with responsibility for the Armed Forces, she said:

“We are a proud supporter of the armed forces and we have put in place a variety of ways to commemorate this year’s Remembrance events right across Cumberland. Please support the Poppy Appeal and take time to join in the national moments of reflection.”

Chair of Cumberland Council, Cllr Andy Semple added:

“I am delighted that the council has taken so many steps to commemorate Remembrance in Cumberland. I will be proud to represent the council at events on the day, and hope many of you are also able to take the time to honour those who served at one of your local Remembrance events.”

The Royal British Legion has organised a series of events within the Cumberland area.

These include a Festival of Remembrance at St Cuthbert’s Church in Carlisle on Friday 8 November. Tickets are free of charge and are available from the Carlisle Tourist Information Centre. Doors open 6.30pm, starts at 7pm.

Cumberland Council, town councils and parish councils are also supporting the Royal British Legion. Remembrance events have been organised in towns and villages.

Please check town council and parish council websites and social media channels for updates.

All are welcome at any Remembrance Day accompanying church services.
