A chance to take a fresh look at plans to make moving around Millom and Haverigg safer and easier is to take place.

Officers from Cumberland Council and representatives from the Millom Town Deal Board will be on hand during a dedicated drop-in afternoon on Wednesday, 6 March to talk through some proposed changes to Connecting Millom and Haverigg - one of four Millom Town Deal projects.

The event will be held at Millom Guide Hall, with residents and those who work in or visit the communities invited to attend anytime between 3pm and 6pm.

Early concept designs went on show at previous community engagement events held in July 2022 and June 2023 which provided valuable feedback for the team working on the scheme. The feedback was used to make revisions to a number of the scheme’s elements which will be the subject of this new engagement exercise.

David Savage, Chair of Millom Town Deal Board, said: “We received some clear feedback on the early plans for this scheme last year which have been used to make changes which we now want to share with residents of Millom and Haverigg.

“This is now the time to come along and look at these new plans. It would be great to see people turn out for this community engagement event so that you can see what has been changed and share your thoughts on the new plans.

“Please come along as we move this project forward to its final design proposals.”

Millom Town Deal secured £20.6 million from the Government’s Towns Fund in November 2022 with an additional £8.7 million in match funding to help the town and its communities to thrive in the future.

Cumberland Council is now working to deliver each of the Millom Town Deal projects.

Once completed, the Connecting Millom and Haverigg project will make it easier and safer for people to move around Millom and Haverigg on foot, bicycle and by incorporating the needs of those with limited mobility.

Technical experts from WSP UK Ltd and Open are set to further develop the project which will include meeting the standards and requirements of the Department for Transport and National Highways. Close working will also take place with Northern Rail to develop the railway station as an attractive and welcoming gateway into the town.

Councillor Mark Fryer, Leader of Cumberland Council, said: “From the outset, we were committed to ensuring Cumberland Council listened to those at the heart of its communities and I’m delighted to see this in action here.

“The funding secured through Millom Town Deal is significant and we want to make sure we get these schemes right so that they go on to help the area thrive and prosper into the future.

“I would encourage people to take the opportunity to view changes made in light of the feedback received previously at this new engagement event.”
