Cumberland Council is thanking everyone who participated in the recent survey about the regeneration of Market Square and Greenmarket in Carlisle.
The feedback provided is instrumental in shaping a welcoming and lively space that caters to the needs and desires of residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
The project aims to transform a 6,000-square-meter area into a unique, multifunctional events space, hosting a diverse array of exciting activities and gatherings. The council’s goal is to create an attractive destination that nurtures community engagement and attracts visitors to the vibrant city.
The council is paying attention to the feedback from the survey, and adjustments will be made to address the following areas of concern:
Names and phrases - among the popular phrases submitted to represent Carlisle were:
- "Be just fear not"
- "The Great Border City"
- "Border Reivers"
The council is considering incorporating one of these phrases or their meanings into the design to reflect Carlisle's unique identity.
Relocation of the War Memorial - the council has consulted with the Royal British Legion to ensure that the plans respect its significance. The relocation into Market Square will provide more space for gatherings and parades. The council will also improve the plinth, incorporating the two Victoria crosses, based on feedback from the consultation. The relocation of the war memorial will take place this summer and be completed in time for Remembrance Day 2024.
No bandstand and not green enough - concerns were raised about the lack of a bandstand and insufficient greenery were also addressed. The council confirms that the area will include a stage for live performances and feature trees and planting areas to enhance the environment and improve drainage.
Design is too modern - regarding feedback suggesting that the design looked too modern, the council is working with its landscape architect to ensure the scheme complements Carlisle's heritage whilst incorporating elements of contemporary design. The most popular choice for representing Carlisle via emblem was the Carlisle city logo, and the council is exploring creative ways to integrate this into the design.
Cumberland Council thanks everyone for their input and support in helping to create a vibrant and engaging space. The council looks forward to continuing this journey with the community as this vision becomes a reality.
