Creating a new destination on Maryport’s Prom

A planning application has been submitted for a new Promenade café in Maryport.

If approved, this will kickstart the final section of the regeneration work on the town’s Harbourside and Prom, which is already seeing the creation of a new event space, the replacement of the Shiver Me Timbers play area and the inclusion of a new splash park, a new skate park and enhancements to Maryport Activity Centre.

The new café will be located on the site of a former toilet block and is in a place perfect for enjoying this stretch of coastline in the daytime, and appreciating Maryport’s stunning sunsets in to the evening.

It will include internal and external seating areas, with large windows to make the most of the views across the beach and the Solway beyond. There will be public toilets and the potential for retail space for the operators to use as a beach shop. Though the building’s footprint is fixed by the planning application, the operator will have the chance to get involved in the interior layout to best suit their needs.

The area surrounding the new café has recently been re-landscaped and seating areas improved. The neighbouring skate park, where work started this month, will also drive more footfall to the area. Ageing railings on the Prom have also been replaced with plans to do more as funding allows.

Cumberland Council is managing the £12 million regeneration of Maryport and this planning application is the next step in Maryport’s transformation. The money for the Promenade improvements is being provided by Government funding.
