Cumberland Council is informing residents and businesses that the new Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), will come into effect this week.

The PSPO aims to reduce anti-social behaviour (ASB) and enhance community spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Following the Local Government Reorganisation, which merged Allerdale, Copeland, Carlisle City Council, and the County Council, has allowed Cumberland Council the unique opportunity to streamline and enhance public space regulations.

PSPOs, governed by the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, provide local authorities with versatile tools to address the broad and growing impact of Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB). These orders empower councils to identify and tackle local concerns, safeguarding the community and maintaining the quality of public spaces.

The new PSPO is designed to be a proactive measure, helping prevent ASB while providing effective responses to issues raised by residents and businesses.

The PSPO will be applied consistently based on four key principles: Engage, Educate, Explain, and Enforce. This approach was developed in consultation with Cumbria Constabulary to ensure fairness and transparency.

For detailed information and to view the specific areas covered by the PSPO across Cumberland, please visit the Cumberland Council website.
