This week, buildings across Cumberland will shine in blue in recognition of Care Experienced Week, Monday 28 October - Sunday 3 November, raising awareness of the unique challenges faced by young people leaving the care system.
We are also sharing pledges from local organisations throughout the week, who are committed to supporting care experienced young people and building a brighter future in Cumberland.
The blue lighting aims to draw attention to the ongoing support needed for care experienced young people and signals our support. Care experienced young people often face significant obstacles as they navigate life after care, including securing stable housing, education, and employment. By illuminating prominent buildings in blue, Cumberland aims to bring visibility to these challenges and encourage conversations about how the wider community can step in to support.
Cllr Emma Williamson, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Children, Family Wellbeing and Housing, said,
“We want to make Cumberland a place where care experienced young people are embraced by their community and supported in overcoming the challenges they face. Whether it’s providing safe housing, access to education, mental health support, or mentorship, we must work together to create a network of support and opportunity.
“We would love for more organisations to open to these young people and help to provide the opportunities they need. I have really high aspirations for our care experienced young people and by creating an inclusive community we can help every young person reach their full potential.
“I also want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible achievements of all our young people, Care Experienced Week is an opportunity to reflect and celebrate them.”
