The schemes are part of a £12 million regeneration project which aims to enhance and develop three of the town’s biggest assets - the town’s high street, harbour and promenade.
Cubby Construction of Carlisle has won the tender to create the new café and beach shop on the promenade. This fabulous new eatery, with views across the Solway, will be located on the site of the disused toilet block. The promenade project includes a new bike and skate track.
Thomas Armstrong Group, of Flimby, and the design team from Align Property Partners in Cockermouth, now have the contract to build the new harbourside event space, and to revamp the Wave, which is changing its name to Maryport Activity Centre as part of the process.
Thomas Armstrong Group has also won the tender for Maryport’s new public realm scheme which will reconfigure the parking on Senhouse Street, clear cluttered street furniture, and install new signage all across the town.
The harbourside project will see a blank patch of grass transformed into an outdoor event and performance space, and there will also be a new splash park, and an upgrade to the Shiver Me Timbers play park.
The fourth aspect of the plans is an upgrade to Maryport Activity Centre, including the existing gym, a more exciting Clip n’ Climb, an adventure soft play area, and multipurpose spaces which can be used by all ages.
The developments will be funded by the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.
The Leader of Cumberland Council, Councillor Mark Fryer, said:
“I am looking forward to seeing work start on these great new schemes which will really put Maryport on the map.
“I am doubly pleased to see local firms applying for contracts which will change the landscape where their teams live, work and play. This regeneration will make a difference to everyone who loves to spend time in West Cumbria.”
