Driving forward: Highway upgrades from Westnewton to Allonby

Cumberland Council is set to begin essential carriageway improvement works between Westnewton and Allonby, starting Monday 18 November, for a duration of two weeks. This project aims to create smoother, safer journeys for all road users.

The pre-surface dressing patching works will repair the existing road surface before surface dressing. The process involves removing and trimming defective surfacing material, followed by patching with hot bitumen to seal the surface and prevent water access.

These works will require a full road closure and are expected to last two weeks, weather permitting. Work will take place Monday to Friday, from 7.30am to 4.30pm, with no weekend work planned.

Vehicle access for residents and businesses will be maintained whenever possible, and specific access needs can be discussed with on-site staff. Full access for emergency service vehicles, pedestrians, and dismounted cyclists throughout the works.

Recycling and waste collections will not be disrupted, and information about bus stop relocations will be posted at current bus stops. For any queries regarding bus routes, passengers are encouraged to contact Stagecoach directly.

Cumberland Council reminds the public that businesses remain open as usual throughout this essential work and encourage the community to continue supporting local businesses.

The council thanks the public for their patience and cooperation during this important project and apologises for any inconvenience caused.
