Cumberland Council announces that essential works will commence along the River Caldew near Sheepmount Bridge starting the week of Monday 25 November, with an aim for completion by Christmas.
The project addresses urgent erosion issues, safeguarding the area against further damage while preserving accessibility for local residents, businesses and park users.
The council is working closely with regulatory authorities, statutory service providers, and community partners to ensure the work is conducted safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption, reinforcing the ongoing enhancement of the Sheepmount and surrounding spaces as a centre for health, wellness, and community engagement.
The work will take place from Monday to Friday, between 8.00am and 5.00pm, with no work on weekends, for approximately four weeks. The scope of the work includes rock bag deliveries, installation of Heras fencing, ecological surveys (such as for bats), selective vegetation and tree pruning by specialist arborists, and measures to protect the eroded riverbank.
Traffic management measures will be in place on Mayor’s Drive. Although pedestrian and cyclist routes will remain unaffected, the informal car park at the Sheepmount on Mayors Drive will be closed for the project duration as it will serve as the contractor’s work compound.
Works will be being carried out by the local contractor Metcalfe Plant Hire Limited.
This emergency project reflects Cumberland Council’s dedication to maintaining public safety and supporting the resilience of community spaces. The council apologises for any inconvenience caused.
