Exploring sustainable initiatives at Millom Network Centre

Millom Network Centre

Cumberland Council is delighted to showcase the commendable efforts of the Millom Network Centre and its commitment to sustainable initiatives in the area.

Situated in Millom, the Millom Network Centre, a charitable organisation, is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of the local community. The centre actively engages in various praiseworthy projects, underscoring its dedication to sustainability and community welfare.

As part of its ongoing dedication to environmental responsibility, Cumberland Council is proud to announce the launch of the newest compost demonstration site at the Millom Network Centre. This initiative involves partnering with Garden Organic to equip volunteer Master Composters with the skills to offer home composting advice.

As part of this work, the volunteers give presentations and attend events to promote and encourage home composting. If people are interested in becoming a Master Composter or receiving composting advice, please contact Cumberland Master Composter project coordinator Deborah by email mccumbria@gardenorganic.org.uk

The Millom Network Centre also has initiatives include the promotion of reuse and upcycling through its workshop, where volunteers can acquire woodworking skills, participate in furniture upcycling, or pursue personal projects. Additionally, the centre operates a food pantry that offers affordably priced food, sometimes providing surplus stock for free to prevent wastage.

Furthermore, the Millom Network Centre remains committed to education and community engagement. The organisation conducts Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) training, hosts a men's lunch group with support from its on-site cafe, and is in the process of establishing a women's group, fostering a sense of community and inclusivity.

Outside in the garden, interpretation boards at the site allow self-guided tours, showcasing composting units that convert on-site cafe food waste into compost used for growing vegetables, herbs, and fruit in raised beds. This progressive step aligns with broader sustainability goals, contributing to a healthier, eco-friendly community.

Funding from Cumbria Action for Sustainability (CAfS) played a crucial role in supporting the compost demonstration site, covering the expenses for additional compost bins and signage, which was greatly appreciated by the council.

Councillor Bob Kelly, Executive Portfolio Holder for Cumberland Policy and Regulatory Services at Cumberland Council, expressed his admiration for the Millom Network Centre after a recent visit, stating:

"Having had the privilege of touring the Millom Network Centre, I found it truly remarkable to witness their accomplishments.

“I am particularly pleased that our Cumberland Master Composters initiative, in collaboration with Garden Organics, is now accessible at the centre as well. It serves as a valuable community asset, and I encourage everyone to visit; there is a wealth of knowledge and insights to be gained, especially regarding composting!"
