Households encouraged to respond to Cumberland’s annual electoral canvass

Canvasser Susan Dockeray out canvassing

Households in Cumberland that have not yet responded to the annual canvass – a process which seeks to make sure electoral registration details are up to date - may soon receive a visit from a council official.

Canvassers, who are employed by Cumberland Council, have begun knocking on doors across the area and will continue to do so until November 22nd.

Residents are being reminded that all canvassers will carry photo ID and will never enter any property. Responses will be recorded on a tablet device and if there is no response a further visit may be scheduled or a ‘calling card’ with further instructions will be posted.

The annual canvass takes place to keep the electoral register up to date and also helps identify any residents who are not registered, so that they can be given the opportunity to apply.

Letters, emails and text messages were sent to some residents last month with household visits now underway. Residents can still respond to any communications they’ve had via letter, text or email and if a response is received before a visit is due to take place, then the household will be removed from the list.

Andrew Seekings, the council’s Electoral Registration Officer, said: “Thank you to all those households who’ve already responded to the annual canvass, ensuring that important electoral information is accurate and up to date. If you’ve not yet responded, then we ask you do, following the instructions on the letter, email or text you’ve received or by confirming your details to the council representative who visits your household.”
