Latest investments from Lakes to Sea panel

A poly-tunnel and a giant play tunnel were both among the nine projects invested in by the Lakes to Sea Community Panel recently.

The panel, made up of ward members and created to direct crucial investment to local projects, made the following funding awards:

  • The Riversmeet Community Cooperative received £2,304 towards a polytunnel in Cockermouth. This will be used to enable children to learn about growing plants and food.
  • The 1st Dearham Boys and Girls Brigade were awarded £180 towards a giant play tunnel.
  • Kirkgate Arts and Heritage in Cockermouth were given £4,276 for a new portable PA system.
  • Little Clifton Parish Council received £1,950 towards improving flower beds and a seating area in the village.
  • Maryport Bowling Club was helped with £3,595 to buy a sprinkler system.
  • The 2nd Maryport Scouts were awarded £1,092 for equipment including compasses, maps and safety whistles.
  • Lakeland Rowing Club was given £1,200 towards a storage shed at their Keswick HQ and marquee repair materials.
  • Dean Parish Council received £372 to help buy a replacement public bench.
  • Bee Unique were awarded £582 towards inflatable play equipment to use at events. Income from this helps sustain their work with people with special educational needs. Three community panels have come together to fund this project, which operates in all of their areas. 

Cumberland Council’s Director of Public Health and Communities, Colin Cox, said: “ Our community panels are here to nurture vibrant communities by investing in the hard work and innovation of our incredible third sector. They, and the communities themselves, have led our investments and it is fantastic to see it change lives at a granular level."

The Lakes to Sea Community Panel covers the wards of Bothel and Wharrels, Cockermouth North, Cockermouth South, Dearham and Broughton, Keswick, Maryport North and Maryport South.

The next Lakes to Sea Community Panel meeting is on December 12 at Crosthwaite Parish Room, Main Street, Keswick, at 6pm. People who live, work or study in the area may submit questions, either in advance or at the start of the meeting, for discussion during the meeting. 

There is also an informal 30 minutes before the meeting, when residents can chat to councillors and Community Development staff. This is at 5.30pm, immediately prior to the start of the formal meeting at 6pm.
