A new ‘pocket park’ and three areas of new marked car parking have been created in the centre of Maryport.
The pocket park has restored an area of derelict land on the corner of Crosby Street and John Street. It will give people a place to sit and enjoy new planted areas, and a set of historic horse-mounting steps have been retained as part of the scheme. The raised flower beds will be filled this Spring.
The three new off-street parking bays have been marked out at the top of Furnace Lane, just off Senhouse Street, so are ideally placed for people to visit the town’s main shopping area.
All the public realm improvements have been managed by Cumberland Council and made possible by the Government’s Future High Streets Fund. Maryport is currently undergoing £12 million of regeneration schemes – bringing new attractions, new outdoor spaces, and transforming some of the town’s most historic buildings.
Leader of Cumberland Council, Councillor Mark Fryer, said:
“Maryport has loads of places to sit and watch the world go by but there are very few right in the heart of the town.
“This new pocket park is perfectly located for the surrounding residential areas and I hope we get some fabulous weather soon so that people can really enjoy it.
“The three off-street areas at the top of Furnace Lane have suffered from some chaotic parking in the past and it is great to see that the new marked bays are already having a positive effect. Hopefully this helps those who live and work nearby.
“There is so much happening in Maryport at the moment thanks to Cumberland Council’s regeneration projects. It is great to see.”
