Cumberland Council is set to embark on a transformative journey for its road infrastructure, thanks to a substantial £14.3 million investment from the Government's Levelling Up Fund, which was received in 2023.

The funding will see a comprehensive programme of improvements works on the A5086 between Cockermouth and Egremont and A595 south of Sellafield. This will include resurfacing; drainage works and bridge repairs incorporating innovative opportunities for carbon reduction measures and the use of recycled materials.

Commencing on Monday 8 January 2024 the first phases of works will focus on the following two projects:

  • A5086 between Rowrah and Crossgates – with work to take place over a six-week period, in two phases.  Phase one - Kirkland junction to Rowrah; phase two from Crossgates to Kirkland Junction.
  • A595 Whicham Valley – work to take place over a four-week period.

To enable the council to complete works safely there will be a full road closure during each phase, with a signed diversion route in place.

The works will be carried out under a daytime road closure from approximately 7:30am – 6.00pm daily. The road will remain close for the duration of the works.

If residents or businesses require access to their property, we kindly request that this is discussed with the Traffic Marshal who will be on site during the works, please be aware that there might be some delays accessing properties.

Access will be maintained for emergency services during the works.

Further improvements are planned for over the next year, with the next project scheduled for the end of February on the A5086 Parkside.  Additionally, A595 schemes are scheduled to start after the Easter holidays, with night-time road closures to minimise disruption. More information will be available nearer the time.

Cumberland Council wishes to thank the community for their continued support and patience while improvements are made to the road network and apologises for any inconvenience.
