Residents urged to ensure their electoral registration details are correct

LOCAL residents are being urged to make sure their electoral registration details are up to date.

Cumberland Council has started its annual canvass of electors to ensure the details it has on the electoral register are correct. The process also helps identify any residents who are not registered, so that they can be given the opportunity to apply.

Each year the council contacts every household to check whether it has the correct people registered to vote and to ask residents to inform it of any changes.

The council has therefore started contacting residents in several ways including by email and text message to make the process simpler, as well as sending letters to those it does not hold email or telephone contact details for.

This means electors may receive an email, text message or letter from Cumberland Council over the coming weeks asking them to check who it has on the register and inform it of any changes.

Andrew Seekings, the council’s Electoral Registration Officer, said: “It is important that people look out for the emails, texts and letters which will be sent as part of the annual canvass and provide us with details of any changes as required. As this year has shown, you never know when an election may happen, so it is important that you are on the electoral register. There are other benefits too such as for your credit rating.”

More information can be found on the Council’s website, by calling 0300 373 3730 or emailing elections@cumberland.gov.uk .

Anyone who needs to register to vote can do so quickly and easily online or by contacting the elections team on 0300 373 3730. It is particularly important that those who have recently turned 18 or have moved address are registered at the right property.
