Cumberland Council will continue its essential work to improve the A595, with improvement works commencing from Holmrook to Muncaster on Monday 30 September.
This project is part of a £14.3 million Government-funded programme aimed at enhancing road infrastructure and reducing future disruptions, making travel smoother and safer for all. Once complete, the upgraded section will significantly improve journey quality and resilience, benefiting both residents, commuters and businesses.
Improvements between Holmrook to Muncaster will include road network repairs, drainage replacement, traffic sign replacements and refreshing of road markings. The works will last for approximately seven weeks, weather permitting, starting Monday 30 September.
The works will be carried out in three phases:
- Phase 1: Holmrook to Ravenglass junction – Monday 30 September to Friday 25 October
- Phase 2: Ravenglass Junction to Muncaster Castle – Monday 4 November to Tuesday 12 November
- Phase 3: Holmrook and Drigg Junction – Wednesday 13 November to Tuesday 19 November
To minimise daytime disruption, a nighttime road closure will be in effect between 7.00pm and 5.00am, Monday through to Saturday morning, for the duration of the project, except during the October half-term holidays (Monday 28 October to Friday 1 November). During daytime hours (5.00am to 7.00pm), two-way traffic lights will be in operation to keep traffic flowing.
During the nighttime road closure, vehicles may pass through the site with escort assistance from 7.00pm to 10.00pm, though delays of up to 30 minutes may occur. From 10.00pm to 5.00am, the road will be fully closed to vehicles, though pedestrian access will be maintained.
The works will be carried out by the council's contractor, DSD Construction Limited. Access for emergency vehicles (under blue lights) and pedestrians will be maintained at all times.
Cumberland Council acknowledges the inconvenience caused by these road improvements and sincerely apologises for any disruption. However, these essential upgrades will bring long-term benefits by improving road quality and reducing future issues. The council remains committed to working closely with local businesses and residents to ensure continuous access and support throughout this period.
