Road Improvement Works on A597 Workington Viaduct

Road works sign

Cumberland Council will begin resurfacing works on the A597 Workington Viaduct starting Monday 28 October. These works form part of the council's ongoing efforts to improve the local road network.

The resurfacing will be carried out in three phases and is expected to last three weeks, weather permitting. Work will take place Monday to Friday, from 7.00am to 7.00pm, with no weekend work planned.

The council confirm that the road will be made safe and reopened to the public on weekends.

Each phase of the works will last approximately five working days, with a signed diversion route in place for each stage. The work is planned as follows

  • When phase one road closure is in operation a single lane will remain open for traffic between Havelock Road (U2532) and Tesco (A597).

  • When phase two road closure is in operation, traffic from Tesco (A597) will be able to use the lower side of the viaduct, with access to either Station Road (B5297) or the continuation of the A597 towards Clay Flatts Industrial Estate.

  • When phase three road closure is in operation, the viaduct will be fully open in both directions for all traffic on the A597 and B5297, except for access from Havelock Road (U2532), which will remain restricted.

A location plan clearly showing these extents can be found on one.network.

To assist with traffic flow and provide clear guidance the council has installed digital Variable Message Signs (VMS) on major routes leading to the viaduct. As work progresses, these boards will remain operational helping to reduce congestion.

During the closure, Stagecoach will operate a reduced bus service within the vicinity of the works. For any queries regarding bus routes, passengers are advised to contact Stagecoach directly.

Access to the train station car park will be via Clay Flatts Roundabout during Phase one. After this phase, the road will be open in both directions.

Waste collections will not be affected in residential areas.

Cumberland Council reminds the public that businesses remain open as usual throughout this essential work and encourage the community to continue supporting local businesses.

Although some delays are expected, access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Cumberland Council appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation during this important project and apologises for any inconvenience caused.
