Road improvements on the A5086 Main Street, Cleator

Cumberland Council highways jacket

The work will be carried out by the council's contractor DSD Construction Limited and will start on Monday 23 September, for approximately ten weeks subject to weather conditions.

The first phase of work will begin on Monday and be managed under traffic lights until Monday 28 October (following the half-term holiday). After that, a full road closure will take place to ensure safety of both road users and staff, as the road will not be wide enough to remain open during the work. During this period, a footway will be provided for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists, while a clearly marked diversion route will be in place for vehicles.

The council confirms that school buses will be permitted to pass through the road closures in the mornings and afternoons, and waste collections on affected routes will proceed as scheduled on the normal collection dates. The council is working with Stagecoach to minimise disruption to public transport services during the closure and updates will be provided nearer the time.

More details about the road closure will be provided closer to the date, or residents can attend a drop-in session organised by the council where they can learn more about the planned highways improvements and discuss any feedback directly with the team. Details are as follows:

Venue: Jubilee Room at the Community Hall, Church Street, Cleator, Cumbria, CA23 3DD

Date: Thursday 26 September 2024, 4pm – 6.30pm.

This project is part of a £14.3 million investment from the Government's Levelling Up Fund, aimed at enhancing road infrastructure and reducing future disruptions, making travel smoother and safer for all.

The Main Street, Cleator will include significant upgrades, such as road network repairs, drainage replacement, traffic sign updates, and refreshing of road markings.

Cumberland Council understands that these improvements may cause temporary inconvenience to road users, especially given the importance of the A5086 but we ask that the community be respectful towards staff working on this project and reminds every one of its zero-tolerance policy on threatening or abusive behaviour towards staff.

The council is committed to minimising disruption and is working closely with local stakeholders, including Parish Councils and local members, to address concerns and facilitate a smooth transition.

Cumberland Council wishes to thank the community for their continued support and patience while they improve the road network and apologise for any inconvenience.
