Cumberland Council, in collaboration with the Hadrian’s Wall Trail Partnership, has developed a new ramped access to a popular riverside footpath in Carlisle.
The council’s countryside access team has a rolling programme of improvements to the rights of way network and have recently completed surfacing a path across the Swifts area, to access walks along the River Eden. The final phase of these improvements received vital support from the Hadrian’s Wall Path Partnership.
The partnership is made up of the managing authorities responsible for the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail and overseen by the Northumberland National Park Authority.
This newly installed ramp will not only benefit weary walkers along the Hadrian’s Wall path but also facilitates a circular walking route. By removing the obstructive steps behind the Sands Centre and creating a new access point suitable for push chairs and individuals with mobility issues, the walk now links the Swifts, Eden Bridge, Rickerby Park and Memorial Bridge.
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:
“Schemes such as these may only need a small alteration to the rights of way network, but they have a profound effect on people’s enjoyment of an area and supports the health and wellbeing of the community”.
