Cumberland Council is excited to announce the successful completion of the first phase of the transformative project to enhance cycling, walking, and wheeling infrastructure in Whitehaven.
Thanks to funding from the Government's Active Travel Fund, this project focuses on Route 14 of the Whitehaven Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), improving connections throughout the South Whitehaven area.
The improvements, which included widening the shared cycleway/footway and upgrading to promote Active Travel, has been successfully completed between Wasdale Close and Stanley View (past the pigeon huts).
The next phase will focus on Esk Avenue and extend towards Whitehaven Amateurs Football Club, with a projected completion date of Friday 27 September 2024. This phase will include upgrading traffic signs and road markings. Please note that during working hours, the cycleway/footway will be fully closed from 7.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.
Cumberland Council's specialist Highways Engineers are carrying out the project in phases, continuing throughout the autumn months.
Cumberland Council would like to thank the community for their continued support and patience as they make Whitehaven an even better place for walking, cycling, and wheeling. The council apologise for any disruption the works may cause and are confident the final result will be worth it!
