Start with The Park project is a transformative £2.6 million investment to create and improve green spaces between St Cuthbert’s Garden Village and the Carlisle city centre.
Kicking off this ambitious programme is the demolition of two disused buildings – the former Aviary and Stores – along with a small garage. These structures have stood unused for over a decade and have become targets for anti-social behaviour. Their removal will significantly improve safety, visibility, and the overall park environment.
Funded through the Carlisle Town Deal, this project aims to rejuvenate Hammond’s Pond and support local infrastructure, health, and well-being. In preparation for the demolition, asbestos surveys have been completed, utilities re-routed, and a line of overgrown conifers at the rear of the buildings has been removed to open up sightlines.
Demolition is to start from Tuesday 22 April, led by local contractors Kirkaldy & Roe Ltd, who will dismantle the buildings using plant machinery. All waste materials will be transported off site for recycling and disposal. Remaining tree stumps and a deteriorated steel fence will also be removed, and the site will be levelled and secured with a new bow top railing fence. Temporary fencing will be in place throughout to ensure public safety, with the works expected to be completed within two weeks.
The demolition is just the start. The wider Start with The Park initiative will deliver exciting improvements including:
- Upgraded play areas
- A new skate park
- Enhanced footpaths and drainage
- Tree planting and landscaping
- Improved connectivity to Eden Valley Hospice
- New and improved active travel routes
In addition, new crossing points will be introduced to boost accessibility and link the park with the future St Cuthbert’s Garden Village (SCGV) — a development that will bring up to 10,000 new homes, prioritising sustainable travel and green living.
A consultation event was held last Wednesday (16 April), providing an opportunity for residents to share their thoughts and feedback on the project. The conversations held during the event offered valuable insight to take forward. Cumberland Council extends its thanks to everyone who attended and contributed.
Residents are also reminded that the online consultation for the new equipment in the infants’ play area is still open until Monday 5 May. Feedback can be submitted by visiting the council’s website.
This project is a major milestone in shaping Carlisle’s future and ensuring that Hammond’s Pond remains a safe, accessible, and vibrant space for generations to come.
