English Street works planned – final step in connecting Devonshire Street to the Carlisle Southern Gateway

Cumberland Council is updating residents and businesses of works on English Street in Carlisle, set to begin next week.

As part of the next phase of the Southern Gateway project, this work will enhance the pedestrian crossing area between The Cumberland Building Society, Santander, NatWest, and the former B&M (Woolworths) site. These upgrades will build on the recent improvements to English Street and link with last year’s successful regeneration of Devonshire Street. The existing temporary tarmac will be replaced with a high-quality, permanent finish, helping to create a more attractive and accessible city centre.

The improvement works will commence on Monday 28 April and continue for eight weeks

This phase includes the construction of a raised table at the junction of Victoria Viaduct and English Street. The works will involve the installation of ducts, upgraded traffic signals, new kerbing and paving, and improved pedestrian crossings.

Construction works will take place Monday to Friday, from 7.00am to 5.00pm, excluding Bank Holidays.

During this period, English Street and Devonshire Street will be closed, affecting bus services 62, 64, and 69 will be diverted in both directions.  Passengers are encouraged to check the Stagecoach website for up-to-date travel information.

The Southern Gateway project forms part of the Council’s £100m regeneration programme for Carlisle, supported by UK Government funding through the Future High Streets Fund, Town Deal and Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal initiative. This multi-million-pound investment is focused on transforming the city centre by improving infrastructure, boosting economic growth, and creating a more attractive, accessible environment for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

The council acknowledges that works of this scale can be disruptive, particularly for those living or working nearby, and is committed to delivering the improvements with minimal impact.

For more information or to discuss concerns, residents can report online via the council’s website or contact the Highways Hotline at 0300 373 3736. For any queries regarding the regeneration projects, please email Carlisle.projects@cumberland.gov.uk
