Mattress fly-tipped on Eastern Way in Carlisle

Cumberland Council has successfully prosecuted a fly-tipping offender, resulting in a fine and costs of over £1000.

The case was heard at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court after a large mattress was illegally dumped on Eastern Way.

Emma Irwin, the defendant, who lives near to Eastern Way, was caught on CCTV dragging a mattress from her home and abandoning it near to Eastern Way. She was fined and ordered to pay costs, totalling £1,002, which included the council’s expenses for collecting and properly disposing of the mattress.

Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

“I want to thank the residents who use recycling facilities responsibly. Their efforts help keep these locations clean, tidy, and accessible for everyone, encouraging the correct use of waste disposal services.

“However, I must stress that Cumberland Council takes environmental crimes seriously. Every case of fly-tipping will be investigated, and individuals may face prosecution. We urge anyone contacted by the council regarding environmental offences to engage with us.

“Fly-tipping is more than just an eyesore; it poses serious risks to public health and the environment, attracting vermin, polluting natural habitats, and creating hazards for the community.

“We all have a role to play in keeping our area beautiful. Let’s continue recycling responsibly, and if you witness fly-tipping in your area, please report it.”

Residents can report fly-tipping and other environmental crimes via Cumberland Council’s website.
