Two people cycling in Whitehaven

Cumberland Council is reminding residents and businesses to take part in the final days of the consultation on improving cycling, walking and wheeling routes in Whitehaven.

As part of the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), the project focuses on enhancing routes from Whitehaven Harbour to Esk Avenue, including Coach Road and The Gardens. These improvements are designed to promote active travel, improve safety and accessibility, and encourage more people to walk, wheel and cycle.

It is worth noting that all existing bus stops and service provisions will be retained. Active travel allows people to incorporate movement and exercise into their daily routines, benefiting overall health and well-being.

Public feedback plays a crucial role in demonstrating community support and securing future funding from the Department for Transport. While funding is not yet in place for full implementation, the current phase seeks input on concept designs to help shape the next steps.

Key insights from previous consultations on the Whitehaven LCWIP highlight strong local demand for better cycling and walking infrastructure:

  • 74% of respondents said improvements would encourage them to walk and cycle more.
  • 74% identified busy roads as a key barrier to cycling.
  • 76% supported separate cycle routes for greater safety.
  • 91% backed active travel improvements, even when this meant less space for other road traffic.

The proposed routes are a priority within the Whitehaven LCWIP and include sections of the popular Sustrans C2C Cycle Route and Hadrian’s Cycleway.

In 2024, Cumberland Council secured funding from Active Travel England to improve the cycleway between Esk Avenue and Mirehouse Road in Whitehaven, which connects in with these proposals.

Local businesses and residents are encouraged to share their views on the designs, which will help refine plans before moving to the next stage. The online survey will remain open until Sunday 9 February, and can be found here: Cycling, walking and wheeling proposals for Whitehaven - Cumberland Council - Citizen Space

Cumberland Council thanks everyone who has responded so far; your input and support are greatly appreciated!
