Cumberland Council is pleased to update residents and businesses on the next chapter of the Devonshire Street regeneration project in Carlisle.
Funded by the UK Government’s Future High Street Fund, (£2,040,000 via Carlisle Future High Street) and United Utilities Green Recovery Funding (£250,000), this transformative project has delivered significant enhancements for the public and local businesses, including:
- Widened pavements on both sides of the street.
- New seating, trees, and plants to create a welcoming environment.
- Convenient cycle racks to encourage sustainable transport.
- A single-lane carriageway for improved traffic flow.
- Two loading bays to support local businesses.
Upcoming improvements include the installation of Gobo lighting, a feature that projects sophisticated shapes, patterns, or images for a striking visual effect, often tailored to suit different seasons. Additionally, new cellar lights and under-bench lighting will be installed.
To ensure minimal disruption, the work will take place overnight, from Sunday 19 January for a week, between 8.00pm and 5.00am. During this time, Devonshire Street will be closed to vehicles, but it will reopen by 5.00am each day. A full diversion route will be in place, clearly marked with signage. Devonshire Street will remain open for pedestrians with walkways provided.
The Carlisle regeneration projects continue to revitalise the city centre, making it a more vibrant, accessible, and attractive destination for residents and visitors alike.
