Family fun, fitness challenges, community gatherings, adrenaline rushes – the new and improved Maryport Activity Centre opens its doors this Friday (17 January) and will offer all of this and more.
The venue has undergone a dramatic refurbishment. It now has a bespoke adventure play area, a large gym and fitness studio, with changing rooms and showers added for the first time, a more exciting Clip ‘n Climb attraction, and a range of multifunctional spaces perfect for children’s parties and community groups. There’s also a café and catering facilities.
Maryport Activity Centre will be open from 2pm to 6pm this Friday (17 January) before normal opening hours recommence from 8am on Saturday.
On weekdays, the gym will be open from 6am, then 8am on weekends, with the adventure play area and Clip n’ Climb open from 9am. Bookings are now being taken for the community rooms, and membership packages are available for the fitness facilities.
The new adventure play attraction is aimed at under-10s and has all the slides and obstacles you would expect. They’re designed to celebrate Maryport, with a Roman watchtower and a Northern Lights display, seaside wildlife and shipbuilding. There’s a special area for the youngest children too, with mini soft play activities. There’s even an educational angle, with games to clean up the ocean in the ball pool, examples of Maryport landmarks to discover, as well as a treasure trail to find the pirates’ gold coins
The work on Maryport Activity Centre is part of the £12 million regeneration of Maryport and Cumberland Council is managing the regeneration projects. Thomas Armstrong Construction, of Flimby, has been the main contractor, working with architects at Align Property Partners who have offices in Cockermouth and Kendal.
The Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer, said:
“We held a ‘first look’ at Maryport Activity Centre last weekend, with guided tours, and the feedback has been absolutely fantastic. People are amazed by the transformation of this building.
“I need to thank the council’s Maryport regeneration team for pushing so hard to create something so impressive that will become a destination for locals and visitors alike. Also, thank you to our partners at GLL and our contractors Thomas Armstrong Construction. This is a flagship project in the £12 million regeneration of Maryport and it is fantastic to see the results.”
