There could be a boost in the hedgehog population, thanks to investment from the Lakes to Sea Community Panel.
A project by Melbreak Communities to cut the decline in hedgehogs was funded by the panel at its last meeting.
The group will use the £1,499 towards nest boxes, feed stations, signs and events in schools and community settings. The project will operate in Lorton, Loweswater, Blindbothel and Buttermere.
Several other schemes received investment:
- The North Fells District Scout Group was awarded £1,500 for wifi and CCTV equipment at its Branthwaite campsite.
- Yew Tree Hall in Lorton received £5,262 towards upgrading the building’s fire alarm system.
- Blennerhasset and Baggrow Village Hall was awarded £3,000 for stackable chairs for events at the hall.
- The Happy Mums Foundation received £975 towards a pilot scheme helping manage mental health for mothers and mothers-to-be in Cockermouth.
The Chair of Lakes to Sea Community Panel, Cllr Andrew Semple, said: “These grassroots projects have a profound affect on the quality of life of our residents. Whether it’s a functional village hall, a support group or a wildlife project – these are the things that touch our lives and I am delighted are able to invest in them.”
Cllr Lisa Brown, Cumberland Council’s Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Adults and Community Health, said: “Once again Community Panels are investing in the things that matter according to their residents. The mechanism by which communities decide where investment should be directed is one that really works.”
Cumberland Council’s eight Community Panels were designed to meet the needs of their particular residents and allow them to become part of the investment decision making process.
Made up of ward councillors, they work with residents and a wide range of partners to ensure effective investment. The hyper-local support panels offer is vital in sustaining resilient, active, engaged communities.
The Lakes to Sea Community Panel covers the wards of Bothel and Wharrels, Cockermouth North, Cockermouth South, Dearham and Broughton, Keswick, Maryport North and Maryport South.
The application deadline for the next round of Community Panel support for the Lakes to Sea area is 31 January.
