A multi-million pound project, which will improve pedestrian and vehicle access in a key area of Carlisle’s city centre, is set to reach another important milestone.

The Carlisle Southern Gateway Project will enhance key areas, including English Street, Victoria Viaduct, The Crescent, and Botchergate. It will improve pedestrian and cycling infrastructure while promoting active and sustainable travel.

With wider footways, segregated cycle lanes, additional greenery, and biodiversity-focused planting central to the plans.

The changes aim to create a safer, more welcoming streetscape while boosting economic activity by attracting residents and visitors to the city centre.

Funded by UK Government, the £6.6 million project forms part of the wider Southern Gateway initiative scheme which secured £19.7 million for improvements for Carlisle’s highways and pedestrian network.

To support these improvements, English Street will undergo a temporary closure starting on Monday 6 January 2025, for approximately 16 weeks.

The closure is necessary to complete drainage works and carriageway upgrade. Cumberland Council is working in partnership with public transport companies to minimise disruption and has ensured that clear pedestrian diversion routes are in place.

Additionally, night closures are scheduled for Botchergate, The Crescent, and Court Square on Sunday, 12 January (6pm - 6am) and Monday, 13 January 2025 (9pm - 6am) to remove traffic islands and lights. Temporary traffic lights and pedestrian crossings will be in place for safety during kerb alignment work.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to follow safety signage during this period. The council appreciates the public’s understanding as it works to deliver a more vibrant and sustainable city.

The works are being undertaken by Story Contracting Ltd on the council’s behalf.

Construction work started in June 2024 and is set to be completed by early Autumn 2025.
