Safer steps ahead: New Puffin Crossing coming to Red Lonning, Whitehaven

Red Lonning Whitehaven

Cumberland Council is pleased to announce the upcoming installation of a new Puffin Crossing at Red Lonning, Whitehaven, as part of its ongoing commitment to improving road safety and enhancing pedestrian access across Cumberland.

In response to community feedback and concerns over pedestrian safety, this initiative aims to improve safety for pedestrians, particularly students, and aims to address issues such as vehicle speeds and parking challenges in the area.

The council has collaborated with the Campus Whitehaven and local councillors to develop a solution that benefits all road users. Through extensive research and traffic modelling, the new crossing will provide a safer, more accessible route for pedestrians.

The introduction of the Puffin Crossing will significantly improve safety for students and local residents who regularly use this route. It will also help regulate traffic speeds, creating a more controlled traffic environment. Overall, the changes will contribute to safer and more efficient conditions everyone in the area.

The installation will take place from Monday 7 April to Friday 18 April 2025 under a full road closure, including weekends. Access for emergency services and pedestrians will be maintained at all times, and there will be no effect on waste collections or bus services. The full map of works including the diversion route can be viewed on One Network.

Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

“We are delighted to see this important project moving forward. The safety of our residents, especially young students, is a top priority, and this new Puffin Crossing will make a real difference in ensuring a safer journey for pedestrians while also improving traffic flow in the area.

“We are grateful for the valuable input from the community, which has played a key role in shaping this much-needed improvement.”
