As part of the £3.3 million Carlisle Library transformation, Cumberland Council has partnered with The Rebuild Site CIC to donate old furniture and equipment for repurposing in local community construction projects.
In line with its commitment to sustainability and supporting local communities, Cumberland Council has donated surplus library furniture to The Rebuild Site CIC. The Rebuild Site works to repurpose excess materials, with a particular focus on construction items, ensuring they are put to good use rather than going to waste. These materials will support community groups, charities, and DIY enthusiasts by providing affordable, nearly new resources for building, crafting, and repair projects.
The library is currently closed temporarily to undergo a significant upgrade, funded by the UK Government’s Carlisle Town Deal, with additional investment from Cumberland Council. This ambitious project will see the library transformed into a modern learning and community hub, complete with state-of-the-art facilities, a dedicated children’s zone, social spaces, adult learning classrooms, study areas, and a display for The Jackson Collection.
To ensure continued access to essential services, a temporary library space will open within part of the existing building by the end of February. In the meantime, Cumberland Council’s library links in Carlisle (Morton Manor, Denton Holme, and Harraby Community Centre), as well as Longtown and Brampton Libraries, will provide access to book borrowing, PCs, and WiFi. Digital services, including the BorrowBox app, and family history resources such as Ancestry and FindMyPast, will remain available. The Adult Learning Service has temporarily relocated to the Civic Centre in Carlisle.
Cumberland Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said:
“We are thrilled to be working with The Rebuild Site to ensure that our surplus furniture benefits the local community. Sustainability is at the heart of our regeneration project, and by donating these materials, we are not only reducing waste but also supporting fantastic local initiatives.”
