Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places at Cumberland Council said:

“I am delighted that Carlisle’s Teenage Market is going from strength to strength.  Thank you, also, to the team at The Lanes for working with us to develop and host the market within the centre and for giving our young people the opportunity to trade and perform within this busy retail environment.

“With the continuing popularity of the Teenage Market it is clear that we have a growing community of young entrepreneurs within the Cumberland area. It is fantastic to see that these creators want to be on their local high street, and that we are supporting them to perhaps make the transition from online to offline with their businesses.

“I know all those taking part will have worked exceptionally hard getting everything ready for their stalls and performances and I hope as many people as possible can visit the Teenage Market and support our talented young people.”

Susan Owens, Manager of The Lanes Shopping Centre added:

“Through our ‘Community at The Lanes’ programme we are keen to support as many local initiatives, charities and events as we can and as such we are thrilled to have been asked, once again, host the Teenage Market.

“The Lanes has been a major presence on the high street within Carlisle for 40 years and I am thrilled that we are able to support the next generation of retailers from both within the city and across the local area, through supporting the Spring Teenage Market. The team at The Lanes are looking forward to the market and know that the event will really complement our customers’ shopping experience.”

Established in 2012 in Stockport by brothers Joe and Tom Barratt, Teenage Markets are now held regularly throughout the country. Joe Barratt, National Director of The Teenage said:

“Across the country, young people need support and encouragement to turn their creative ideas into viable small businesses, and that is why it’s so good to see Cumberland Council keep on making the commitment to provide young entrepreneurs with a free opportunity to trade in Carlisle through The Teenage Market.

The success of the events, including the ongoing partnership with The Lanes Shopping Centre, was recently highlighted as an example of best practice at the Retail Destination Live conference in Manchester, as it’s clear how much of a difference the opportunity is making to the lives of young people from all across Carlisle. We encourage more young people to get involved and benefit from the opportunity that the events provide.”
