Cumberland Council, in partnership with Stagecoach, is excited to announce that its new and improved bus routes have already delivered 11,512 passenger journeys as of 15 March 2025.
As part of the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), the first phase of enhancements launched in the week commencing 4 November 2024. Working in collaboration with local members, bus operators, community stakeholders, and the public, the Council has introduced a more reliable, accessible, and inclusive bus network.
The following new routes were introduced in November, and have been exceptionally well received by local communities:
Route 22: Cleator Moor – Cleator – Whitehaven Hospital
This vital route ensures reliable access to essential services, with a focus on accommodating passengers with mobility needs. The council has improved accessibility and supported extended hospital visiting hours to help residents travel with ease and confidence.
Route 60: Silloth – Maryport
This route was reintroduced to reconnect these two key towns, restoring a much-needed link for local communities.
Route M1: Millom Town Service (including Haverigg)
The return of this town service has strengthened community connections and boosted local engagement, contributing to a more vibrant and well-connected area.
In addition to these, enhancements were also made to the following routes in November:
- Route 101: Rockcliffe – Durdar
- Route 300: Workington – Carlisle
- Route 57: Maryport – Dearham – Broughton Moor – Workington
- Route 30: Egremont / Frizington – Maryport
- Continued support for Route 217: Frizington – Lamplugh – Dean – Cockermouth
These improvements have been made possible thanks to funding received from the Department for Transport under the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient, and Connected Places, said:
“I’m delighted that over 11,000 journeys have already been made using these new routes. It’s fantastic to see how these services are helping residents make easier, more reliable journeys.
“Our partnership with Stagecoach represents a major step forward in our commitment to improving public transport. These figures show that the demand is real, and that our investment is making a difference.
“I want to thank all the officers at Cumberland Council for their hard work. Securing millions in funding from the Department for Transport is a huge achievement, and to then collaborate with local people and operators to deliver high-quality services is something we’re very proud of.
“Together, we’re driving forward our mission for a greener, more connected, and vibrant Cumberland.”
