Cumberland Council is pleased to announce the launch of significant improvement works for Green Market and Duke Street in Whitehaven.

This transformative initiative, part of the Public Realm Improvement Plan, represents a £450,000 investment made possible through contributions from Sellafield Ltd, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and the council itself.

Local firm Thomas Armstrong (Construction) Ltd, have been contracted to carry out the works, which will begin on Monday 17 February for approximately 13 weeks. Work will take place daily from 8.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. If work is scheduled to take place over a weekend, the council will notify residents and businesses closer to the time.

The initiative aims to revitalise the central areas, creating a more inviting, functional, and culturally enriched space for residents, businesses, and visitors. Planned improvements include the installation of new seating, planting, and litter bins to enhance both the appearance and functionality of the area.

A key feature of the project is the addition of historical interpretation boards, designed to celebrate and share the rich heritage of Green Market and the Market Hall.  Whitehaven Heritage Action Group have also designed two commemorative stones be placed at the end of King Street.  The boards and stones will highlight the area’s fascinating history, helping people better understand Whitehaven's unique heritage.

The designs, developed by Align Property Partners, balance modern functionality with historical preservation. By enhancing the public realm, the project aims to boost footfall, support local businesses, and highlight the area’s cultural and historical significance.

To minimise disruption, Cumberland Council and Thomas Armstrong Ltd are actively collaborating with local stakeholders, including street traders, to gather input and provide regular updates. All businesses will remain open as usual during the works, and the council encourages residents and visitors to continue supporting local businesses throughout this period.

Leader of Cumberland Council, Councillor Mark Fryer, said:

“These improvements mark an exciting step forward for Whitehaven. By enhancing the public realm and preserving the area’s rich history, we are not just improving the town’s infrastructure—we are also boosting footfall, supporting local businesses, and creating a legacy that celebrates our heritage.

“This investment in Green Market and Duke Street emphasises Cumberland Council’s dedication to creating vibrant, community-focused spaces while honouring the unique history that makes Whitehaven special”.
